Canisius Filibert
Canisius Tkel Filibert is a Belauan from the Republic of Belau in Micronesia. With Catholic parents, Canisius was named after a Jesuit saint while his last name is of German origin. His middle name is his mother’s Belauan maiden name to bring balance to his identity. His given name from his paternal grandmother is Ngirabetou el Kelulau; so called after two events in the story of Belau. Canisius’ lineage, in the words of his ancestors, span both halves of Belau, the upper sea and the lower sea; and in the lore of indigenous Belauan, his blood is of two worlds, the Northern Sky and the Southern Sky; and like his name – balance is a reality for him.
Canisius works as an officer at PREL in Honolulu but travels often to parts Micronesia.
